Cafes, coffee and cash - is it time to get in on the buzz?

There's no question that Australians love coffee. In fact, we love coffee so much that the café and coffee shop industry is expected to bring in total revenue of $8.3 billion in 2017-18.

According to IBIS World it's expected to grow by 2.7% this year, and these figures don't even include takeaway food services, restaurants, catering services or bars.

The numbers indicate that there's a huge opportunity out there for anyone who wants to enter the coffee industry. Whether you're a coffee lover who wants to turn a passion into business, or simply a savvy person who wants to start up a high growth business – the coffee industry offers incredible potential.

Buying a Café versus a Mobile Coffee Shop

The Café

There's a number of ways to get into the coffee business – by buying a cafe, opening a coffee shop or starting a mobile coffee business.

With each of these ventures, it's imperative you have a passion for good coffee and a genuine desire to serve your customers. As long as you have both of these attributes, there's a good chance you'll be successful.

As with any retail business, location is key. You want your coffee shop to be in high foot traffic areas, places where people will enjoy spending time and where the atmosphere is one that the local community will be drawn to.

Establishing a good reputation for great coffee is imperative, after all you're a coffee shop! Your coffee is your brand and your shop is your vibe and the chance at nailing the two is what makes owning a café so attractive to many budding entrepreneurs.

The Mobile Coffee Shop

A mobile coffee business can be just as lucrative as a café, sometimes even more so due to the reduced overheads.

If you're not one for the same surroundings day in day out but still want to provide a regular customer base with their daily caffeine hit, then mobile coffee vending could be for you.

As with opening a café or coffee shop, location makes all the difference to your prospects in the competitive world of coffee vending.

Selecting a great location for your new business at the beginning will go a long way to ensuring its success.

It's also important to negotiate the best deal when you find the right spot, this alone could save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

Another thing to note is that obviously, you're are a mobile business, you don't have to restrict yourself to a single location.

General Industry Threats & Opportunities

The growing number of speciality cafes and coffee shops has contributed to high competition and a trend towards premium food has been reflected in the changing products offered.

High demand for coffee and the affordable nature of most industry products however, has and will continue to support growth.

Any way you look at it the café/coffee industry can be a lucrative one for those who do their homework and are willing to dedicate themselves to providing a quality product and a high level of service.

At worst, the coffee industry is certainly consistent, with annualised growth expected to increase at an annualised 5.1% over the five years through 2017-18, making it an attractive proposition for many prospective small business owners.
