Why franchising worked for me: Award winning franchisee

If you're looking to start a business, buying into a franchise can be a good alternative to starting a unique venture.

Like any business decision, franchising must be considered carefully and Chemdry Carpet Cleaning 2018 Franchise of the Year winner, Dermot McConville will attest to that having taken the plunge some 10 years ago.

Mr McConville had worked for a range of different bosses in the upholstery trade for over 30 years when his mate Michael Toole suggested he "come and have a look" at a carpeting business called Chemdry.

"My wife was back at work, so I went up to Sydney to check it out," Mr Conville recalled. "She said if you're not happy then go and try something else, so while I was a bit worried about the unknown, I took the plunge and got into it."

Year on year Mr Conville's business got better and better and after winning Chemdry's best 'Up and Coming' franchise just 4 years in, he and his now business partner Mr Toole expanded into the Morning Penninsula market.

Mr McConville puts his success down to always respecting his clients, the franchise he is associated with and the staff he works alongside.

"Because we are a service business, we are often in people's homes or places of business so it's imperative we maintain integrity, are respectful of their space and trustworthy at all times," he said.

"We began our business with this in mind and we haven't changed over the years, we still operate with these values at the top of mind."

Mr McConville said being a part of franchise meant being able to lean on other franchisees, the Franchisor themselves and getting the opportunity to learn from others' experiences.

"Our Franchisors (Chemdry) are fantastic business people. We have a brilliant support network with individual people in charge of business coaching and product information, plus there is a huge amount of training available to us," he continued.

"We just had a 3-day conference and it's amazing what you can learn from other people both old and new to the company."

Mr McConville said that taking the step into franchising had been the best thing he had ever done, adding that the Chemdry system had been a "sensational" support for him.
